Valheim Building Guide – Learn the Fundamentals of Construction

Valheim Building Guide – Learn the Fundamentals of Construction ; If you want to learn how to build like the world's best Vikings in Valheim, you've come to the right place. Building it can be a daunting task for new players as Valheim leaves you with so much to explore on your own – luckily we've done all the hard work for you. Building a solid foundation may seem like an impossible task at first, but the tools in Valheim are surprisingly robust and will eventually allow you to build the house of your dreams.

Unlike many survival games, valheimhas strict requirements when it comes to constructing structures that you must comply with, including an overall building strength and adequate ventilation. When you first land on the Viking afterlife, you need to craft a hammer from rogue branches you find lying around the Meadow biome. This allows you to build structures and, more importantly, a Valheim bench that needs a roof before using it. This is just the beginning of why you need to build a base as you gradually add items like chests, beds and eventually a blast furnace. Your base also protects you from external factors such as nighttime temperature drops and severe weather conditions, as well as sneaky enemies.

If you're just getting started in Valheim or want to brush up on your building skills, this guide covers some of Valheim's construction quirks, whether you lack the tools needed for the job or are trying to cram a large number of items into your Viking home as small as possible. Here's everything you need to know about building in Valheim.

Valheim Building Guide – Learn the Fundamentals of Construction

MAKE A CHIMNEY

To live as the Vikings once lived, every base must have a chimney to house your indoor campfire. You can tell if your base desperately needs ventilation as the structure fills with smoke that can't escape through the roof, thick gray clouds are a dead giveaway here. . Without venting, you'll take damage slowly until you inevitably die.

The obvious solution to this is to remove a roof panel so the smoke has somewhere to go, but this can easily let rain in, which will put out your campfire. Instead, choose a roof panel at the normal spot, but rotate the panel so that it is angled towards the sky. This prevents any rain from entering the building while allowing smoke to escape.

USE THE RIGHT TILES

Wondering why strong winds extinguish your campfire in the middle of the night? It is important to use the right tiles when creating a base. This may seem obvious, but Valheim gives you the option to use any building structure that fits when constructing a roof. While this works visually, using floor tiles instead of tiles will cause you problems in the long run. While real roof tiles protect your floor from windy weather, floor tiles do not.

LAND LEVEL

Valheim's building mechanics may not be intuitive and this is mainly due to building power mechanics. It's important to build a base on a flat surface – this may sound easy, but the game doesn't make it clear when a surface isn't flat. The tiller is excellent for leveling uneven terrain, making it suitable for building a structure. You can make an anchor for five trees and two stones on a workbench.

While it is technically possible to build on rough terrain, this is not recommended as some parts of your structure may be weakened by the lack of a solid foundation. If you've built a symmetrical building but some panels appear structurally weak on one side, double-check that your foundation is touching the ground. What usually happens is that only half of the pieces are buried in the ground, but this can be easily fixed by leveling the area with the anchor.

CREATE A FOUNDATION FIRST

Before building a permanent base, create a flat area using the hoe tool and immediately lay the floor tiles as the base. Again, this may seem like an obvious tip, but straightening the line is extremely annoying. A small base might work for the first few hours of the game, but as you start to progress, you'll soon find yourself trapped within the confines of your tiny house.

As you progress through the game, you'll need more space to store heavy inventory and keep portals nearby, while providing a fortified area to guard against nearby threats. Having an area reserved for your base allows you to build your vehicles while giving you room to spread out whenever you feel comfortable.

LOAD CHESTS TO SAVE SPACE

Chests become vital mid to late game and provide a way to store your precious Valheim bronze and Valheim iron. When building a large plinth, you need plenty of wood and stone on hand at any given time – this is where chests come into play. Ideally, you should have a room dedicated to chests to keep all your supplies in one place.

If you don't have room to separate or you want to make things more organized, you can stack the crates using 1×1 wooden floor tiles. Place this wood flooring directly on the ground on a crate and create a shelf that can hold more crates. Once the chest is placed on the shelf, you can destroy the shelf and the chests will continue to hang in the air. If you want to maximize your space, you can stack up to four chests in a single column. Check out YouTuber Schmidtdude's video embedded above to see how it's done.
