Explore cave systems

If you're not interested in starting your own diamond mine, exploring deep into natural caves is a great way to build up a diamond stockpile.

With a little luck, you might even stumble upon treasure chests containing a few diamonds. Chests can be found in some large caves in Minecraft; however, there is no guarantee that you will find diamonds in them. However, if you do see it in the wild, it's worth going out of your way to open one - just don't expect to accumulate a lot of diamonds with this technique.

Recover lava zones

Look for areas with lava pools while exploring or digging. Lava tends to occur in more open underground areas, essentially creating useful caves that you can use to explore multiple deposits at once. This allows you to quickly dredge for diamonds without having to do a lot of mining for them. It's particularly effective if you're at the level where diamonds are most likely to spawn, which combines nicely with the spawn probability of lava (this happens at levels 40 to 10).

For this reason, it is often effective to explore large caves, especially caves that open into lava. Of course, if the lava becomes a danger to you, you'll want to keep a bucket of water on hand as you escape. Fortunately, naturally occurring lava zones tend to be safer in this regard than mining directly into lava. If you're going to explore for a while, keep the food on hand!

Dig towards diamond levels

Exploring caves and opening treasure chests can earn you a few diamonds, but the best way to get them is to create your own diamond mine. Doing so is a simple, though time-consuming, process.

Diamonds naturally occur between layers 1 and 16 but are more likely to occur in layers 5 to 12. Bedrock is considered layer 0, so you have to dig pretty deep before you start seeing the bright blue rocks. If you need help figuring out which layer you are currently digging, PC players can press F3 to view their current location. Console players will instead have to descend into bedrock and then work again between layers until they reach the desired height.

There are several different mining techniques you can use, but we recommend digging a ladder until you reach tier 12. Once this is complete, dig a long horizontal corridor. From this main corridor, you can now dig vertical paths to maximize your diamond finding potential.

When you find diamonds, make sure to clear all the surrounding blocks to check if they are nearby. Diamond veins typically occur in criss-cross patterns, which usually means there's a bit more hiding.

Prepare the right tools

You will need at least one Iron or Diamond Pickaxe to collect Diamonds. You'll also want to carry extra items in your inventory so you don't have to stop mining when the first one breaks down. After collecting a store of diamonds, we recommend creating an Enchanting Table and picking up a Fortune pickaxe. You can upgrade the Fortune spell to get more resources while mining. The Mending spell is also very useful as it helps your pick to last longer.

Finding diamond loot

Yes, diamonds exist as loot in chests around Minecraft. Not all chests have a chance to contain diamonds, but most do. Focus on blacksmith village chests, shipwreck treasures, castle altar chests, temple chests and final city chests to maximize your luck.
